whenever i wear erin fetherston's frocks, i feel like i've fallen into a fairytale ~ and i love how this particular piece seems more deeply indebted to the brothers grimm than to disney-like lore. even its name ~ the edith dress ~ calls to mind edith wharton (writer of many a supernaturalist ghost story), while its spider-web stripes recall lydia deets, beloved beetlejuice babe. paired with this creepy-crawly-cozy vest, methinks i'm ready to hit up the holiday parties with old jacob marley on my arm!! joyeux noël noir...

since being given the opportunity to sprinkle my costumery with pieces from erin fetherston's fall collection, is it any surprise that i've been flagrantly fixated on all her delightful bird print pieces?! seriously, it's almost obsessive ~ before today i've worn iterations of them here, here and HERE!

the thing is, aside from being lovely on their own accord, they remind me of hunt slonem paintings (an artist i've long adored and have blogged about BEFORE) ~ and i think everyone should take any shot they've got to wear a work of art!

meanwhile, may i just say how happy i am that this particular dress is so forgivingly cut? don't tell the turkeys, but i'm really looking forward to thanksgiving (tomorrow!) ~ the one day of the year when nobody even blinks as i inevitably go in for a third helping of mashed potatoes, followed immediately by a slice or two of sweet potato pie...

...this is one bird who may soon be too full to fly!!

{ costume of the day } specs appeal

i don't know if i've ever mentioned it here before, but i am blind as a bat. without corrective lenses, that big E on the eye chart might as well be a rhinoceros. usually, i wear contacts to combat this issue (i'm terrified of lasik surgery), but some days they give me the most dreadful headaches.

since i'm a girl who loves her sunnies, i've had several favorite pairs turned into prescription glasses over the years. that way, whenever i must sport specs, at least it seems a smidge chicer (if only in my own eyes, no pun intended). maybe one day i'll showcase this little collection?

anyway, the only problem with said solution is that, because my vision is so poor, the lenses i require are about a quarter-inch thick. i'm talking total coke bottle territory! you can barely see my eyes underneath them...
...but they're all the better to see YOU with, my dears!! (bwahahahaha...!)

ahem. what i really wanted to talk about today is these miu miu pants (yes, again). i just love them so much!! i've definitely played the fashion victim before, shelling out big bucks for something i later regretted. but every time i wear these babies, i become even happier that i bought them! they're stunningly well-made, super versatile, super comfortable ~ and truly able to be dressed up or down at the turn of a hat. wardrobe workhorses like these are always worth the investment, don't you agree?

and, though i wouldn't really consider this sweater an investment piece (at under $100), it's also earning its cost-per-wear keep. i don't know why it's taken me so long to discover the beauty of oversized sweaters ~ but now that i have, i can't wait to find more!! if only to give this one a few days off...

i'm currently writing to you from milan, where i am honored to be a guest of grazia magazine for fashion week. before coming over, they asked me to shoot a story and share a few words for their website on the topic of grace ('grazia' is the italian word for this). it's a trait i certainly aspire to exude, albeit one i don't always achieve. anyway, in case you don't speak italian (me neither!), i've included excerpts from the piece i wrote below:

GRACE. Grace is a virtue that’s far-too-infrequently celebrated these days. It’s not about stature or prominence or even glamour. Grace is elegance. It is deference and authority in equal measure. It is good manners, it is kindness and it is a sense of propriety.

But grace is not stuffy. It is being comfortable in one’s own skin, while conscientiously allowing others to feel equally at ease around you. In fashion, this means dressing in a way that is appropriate to your lifestyle and surroundings. That is, embracing your age (at any age!) by combining femininity with a dose of mystery, plus a necessary nod to functionality.

Happily, graceful is the perfect word to describe this season’s long-skirted look. Full and pleated, or languidly bias-cut, it matters not. Either way, the look is simultaneously timeless and contemporary. It harkens back to the silhouettes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, but can be paired just as easily with a utility jacket and wedges as a trench coat and pumps. Modern mid-length skirts can veer fairly formal or incredibly casual – this is not a 1950’s sort of femininity. It’s current in that it’s comfortable and it’s elegant because it works in nearly any situation. You’ll rarely feel under-dressed...

{ fashion's night out }

friday night threatened to be among the most mortifying moments of my life, but ended up being not only pain-free, but also surprisingly fun!! with next to no broadcasting experience, i was thrown right into the line of fire by juicy couture, who hired me to host a three-hour livestream from their 5th avenue fashion's night out party with erin fetherston.

foolhardy as it may sound, this collaboration actually made a bit of sense. you see, i've recently joined forces with erin to help launch her new and improved website, which includes her first-ever e-commerce shop and blog ~ and just debuted yesterday! between this new interactive interface, tonight's runway show (which will also be live-streamed, starting around 6:45!), and erin's illustrious design post at juicy, it's a really exciting time for both brands, and i'm pretty thrilled to be along to document bits of the adventure.

can you feel it? fashion week is nearly upon us!! ready or not, it's kicking off this wednesday, september 7th, when i'll be speaking at lucky's FABB conference (will you be there?).

i have now worn this exact ensemble twice this month (changing only the belt). the first time was for the fourth of july ~ it just seemed so appropriate for fireworks-watching!! and i enjoyed that evening so much that i decided to give the look another go this week. meanwhile, it's been almost a year since i first wore the top ~ it seems apropos only in the extreme height of summer, and then it's just right.

faithful readers may recall that i recently moved to a new home/studio. it's been an exciting and exhausting process! part of me wishes i could snap my fingers and my apartment would magically look like the picture in my head; another part really enjoys the process of transforming it from empty space into the living embodiment of that image.

either way, i've been spending much of my free time in furniture stores, trying to hone in on my distinct decorating style, and find those few perfect pieces that will make my home (teeny sneak peek below) both functional and fashionable.

often, shopping is more importantly about considering, comparing and contemplating than it is about voracious acquisition. the same is as true with clothes and accessories as it is with furniture and housewares. it takes time and patience to discover what really works for you; unfortunately, i don't have an excess of either!

ultimately, i'm trying to achieve a sort of midcentury-simplicity-meets-grandiose-baroque sort of aesthetic ~ marrying a modern sensibility with a bit of bombastic hollywood regency aplomb, all executed in a minimal palette (black/white/silver/gold). if this outfit is any indication, i do believe that focus is affecting my dress!

semi-embarrassing but totally true: i watched every episode of 'the kennedys' miniseries on netflix recently (it's addictively soapy + it was a rainy weekend!), and this outfit was my natural reaction to the late-night jackie-o googling that ensued. i'm not claiming to be nearly as chic as she ~ just understandably inspired by. one could do a lot worse as far as fashion role models go!!

my locks have finally gotten long enough for me to curl ~ and now i can't stop! i love changing my hair because it lets me feel like i'm stepping into a new character, and this one seems softer and more lighthearted than ever before. which is sort of how i feel these days! style really is such a communicative medium.
