{ glamourai gift guide } love for the lads

i have absolutely no problem buying gifts for the ladies in my life ~ it's like shopping for myself! however, the men i love are much more challenging; they just don't need all the stuff that we (read: i) do.

however, they do seem to appreciate the occasional, thoughtfully selected accessory, album, or experience. in case you also have trouble deciding what to buy for the fellows you're fond of, here are a few ideas inspired by the big pony collection colognes (and the men who wear them well):

{ the sportsman in your life might like / clockwise from above left: apc checkered scarf, super sunglasses ($175), tickets to watch a favorite sports team (plus an assurance that he doesn't have to take you with him!), lark+wolff by steven alan striped pullover ($48), queens of the stone age's rated r ($10), digby & iona hunter + hunted cufflinks ($120), ralph lauren tartan belt ($75), ralph lauren big pony collection cologne ($50), west elm ipod speakers ($45) }

{ sexy is the man who has the perfect music for every moment, can rock horn-rims and a bowtie, and knows his way around the kitchen / clockwise from above left: matthew dear's black city ($12), jenson wood turntable ($88), chronicles of never glasses ($277), banana republic bowtie ($60), ralph lauren big pony collection cologne ($50), private collection photography book ($70), what to cook and how to cook it by jane hornby ($26), ralph lauren slippers ($75), leg lamp ($40) }

{ for the rugged and roguish / clockwise from above left: plaid sweatshirt, antler bottle opener, pendleton picnic blanket ($78), amphigorey also by edward gorey ($15), dude no.1 beard oil ($65), stanley flask ($18), urban outfitters boots ($78), ralph lauren big pony collection cologne ($50) }

{ inspired especially by my own special someone / clockwise from above left: ralph lauren big pony collection cologne ($50), in between by guy bourdin ($50), nixon watch ($60), eskuche headphones ($58), omega shaving brush ($12), chronicles of never boots ($400), anthropologie haberdasher's candle, the horrors' primary colors ($13), ralph lauren tartan wallet ($375), banana republic collar stays ($12.50) }

gift/wish

searching for that-perfect-something for another too often leads to accidentally discovering that-perfect-something for you:

{ it's always good to give or get: timeless tomes on stylish lasses, unexpected sunnies, quirky leather-works (like an animal belt or aviator cap), gauzy tops, leopard bags and chic gadget wrappers }

{ home for the holidays } all that glitters

though it may seem a bit early, i'm already making holiday lists ~ for myself, my home and my loved ones! to follow are a few tinsel-y talisman that would be great to give or to get, to put out for a little seasonal sparkle (thanksgiving's coming up soon in the states!) ~ then keep out well into the new year!!

{ CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE LEFT: target stag horn mirror: $220 // anthropologie stork-legs pot/candle stand: $78 // anthropologie enchanted buck measuring cups: $48 // target star mirrors: $200 each // anthropologie serverware: $68 // target mirrored tealight holders: $30 }

{ CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE LEFT: anthropologie measuring spoons: $24 // crate & barrel gold ruffle charger: $5 each // vintage silver deer: $31 // jayson colored pencil set: $65 // urban outfitters wine stopper: $12 // urban outfitters gold sparkle fisheye camera: $60 // jayson crystal votive holder: $54 // crate & barrel salt + pepper set: $60 // jayson wall-mount brass bursts: $45-85 }

{ costume of the day } plaid dreams

{ tom ford sunnies, vintage scarf, vintage boy's blazer (last seen HERE), vintage lace t-shirt, burlap skirt & sixtyseven boots courtesy of modcloth }

attempting to continue with monday's theme of throwing on every nearby item in the same-ish colorway resulted in the above ensemble. i was really excited to wear this new ruffled wrap-front skirt; my only regret was not having more plaid pieces to pair with it. next time i'll really mix it up! preferably with at least one of these:

{ clockwise from above left: orvis satchel, dsquared2 boots, whiting & davis clutch, pour la victoire boots }

{ preparatory }

fall may be creeping up in spurts and starts, but when winter inevitably hits, it always seems to do so full-throttle. that's why ~ for the first time EVER ~ i'm stocking up on weather-ready accessories BEFORE they become necessities. just ordered the boots below ~ the ones on the left for when it's snowing but i still have to be seen (unfortunately, meetings happen in january too!), and the ones on the right for every other run-around day:

as for cold weather caps? i'm thinking a jil sander-inspired DIY just might be in order:

{ raindays as runways }

we've had a lot of rain this week in new york, which is fine when you get to stay put, all cozy at home. but it seems to be a rule of nature that the yuckiest days are also the ones where you're expected to appear all over town!

i've suffered through enough appointments in hideous rain gear (esp. my first couple years in NY!) to know that it's worthwhile to invest in an assortment of sheltering (but chic!) accessories, to help maintain your style on the most dismal of days. in case your own wardrobe could also use some weather-proofing, here are a few protective pieces i like right now:

{ anthropologie ruffle trench & cloche hat, sefton red-stripe umbrella, barney's navy umbrella, see by chloe wellies, anthropologie ensemble, land's end cropped trench }

{ modcloth umbrella, 3.1 philip lim moto/trench hybrid, hunter regent savoy wellies, imax umbrella stand, alexander mcqueen gold skull umbrella, spiegel matte jersey raincoat, silver raindrop earrings }

PS: this recent influx of shopping posts results from the fact that i'm fervently trying to figure out what exactly i need this season (this leads to a lot of online browsing), and i imagine you probably are too!
PPS: soak up some more rainy day inspiration HERE and HERE.

{ personal shopper } habitat shoes

today's post comes to you courtesy of habitat shoes, who have asked me to pick my favorite things from their store and share them with you. easy peasy!! now that i've crossed most apartment necessities off my list, and a new season can be felt in the suddenly-crisper air, i'm in full-on wardrobe replenishing mode.

of course, i don't believe that overly-hoggish acquisition helps anyone in the long run (i'm all for considered consumption!), so i've been giving a lot of thought to which pieces i really need to make my fall/winter wardrobe most functional, comfortable, and current.

and that is exactly what's cool about habitat shoes: it's the most ascetically edited e-boutique i've ever seen. the husband & wife-run shop is almost monastically free of excess ~ everything in there has been carefully vetted, and only those things you can honestly imagine living in remain. this restraint on their part leads dangerously toward indulgence on mine; they've made it so easy to convince myself that each of these pieces is an absolute can't-survive-without-it style staple:

{ clockwise from top left: the perfect goes-with-everything, 24-hour clutch; universal-staple trovata trench; layer-with-anything wrap bracelets (i'd buy both the studded & simpler iterations); the perfect everyday, all-weather heeled boot & matches-most-anything evening shoe }

{ clockwise from above left: the next shape in sunnies; a just-special-enough black bag; the most brilliant tux/cardi/kimono hybrid of all time }

{ the fancy }

{ pentax camera, chanel clutch, new york times newsprint-scented candle, alexander mcqueen card case, iwona ludyga ring, ny + la tables, emerson made jacket, arne jacobsen chair // all via the fancy }

having a birthday (like i did yesterday) means you get at least a month's week's worth of acceptable excuses to senselessly shop for yourself. which further means, this is the is the wrong time for me to get into the fancy ~ a highly-dangerous site for aesthetically-obsessed online lurkers like myself.

also bolstering my desire to buy stuff? watching american pickers on netflix! are you into it too?

{ bench post }

my entryway is sadly lacking in a little spot to plop down and take my shoes off after a nasty nyc excursion. at least daily, i swear i'll finally buy a bench for that area. here are my top twelve contenders ~ let me know which one you love the most!!

{ above, top row: west elm random base side table, lamps plus x-frame ottoman, gold garden stool via ebay // above, bottom row: high fashion home hexagonal table, high fashion home twig table, lamps plus chrome cone ottoman }

{ above, top row: velvet + gold leaf stool via ebay, high fashion home horn-base table, cb2 contact stool // above, bottom row: silver foiled stool via ebay, lamps plus curved basswood bench, tam tam gold storage stool via ebay }

{ lonny mag }

i am a MASSIVE fan of lonny magazine, so i was head-over-heels when asked to contribute my picks to this issue's 'blogger style' spread. click here for more details on my favorite things!!

{ lucite love }

i love lucite as an accessory, as much in my wardrobe as in my home. thus, this airy accent material features heavily in my jewelry, shoe, sunnies and side table collections. i've been meaning to post about my love of translucence for a while now, but it was yesterday's costumery (featuring clear acrylic sunnies AND shoes) that finally prompted me to share a few more of my favorite lucite lovelies from around the web:

{ clockwise from top left: anthropologie end table, prada sunnies, prada sandals, lee angel stackable bangles, alexis bittar ring, waterfall side table, crystallized bangle, prada clogs, jayson game table, prada bag }

{ beso chic }

if you've ever clicked on the product credits in my posts, you've probably noticed i use beso.com as my preferred shopping portal. for a blogger trying to link up lots of products quickly (like myself!), it's a serious time saver. better yet, for an ardent online shopper (again, that's me!! and probably you too?), it makes simultaneously browsing lots of categories, stores, and brands a breeze.

anytime i'm looking for something super-specific (like animalistic apartment accessories), beso is the first place i check ~ and that's why i'm excited to be guest-editing their site for the month of june!

my good friend emily (of cupcakes and cashmere fame) is their style director, joanna (from a cup of jo) is their babies & kids editor ~ and i am proud to be the first in this new guest series. to kick it off, i've selected my favorite finds in fashion, beauty and home decor ~ preview a few below, and check them all out HERE!!

{ animal attraction }

i really enjoy animal-menagerie-themed interior accessories, and thus have them liberally sprinkled all over my home. unfortunately, i just can't seem to find the space (or, in some cases, budget) for everything i crave! nevertheless, here are a few more pieces that i'm truly tempted to obtain:

{ top: black panther coffee table ($845) via ebay // second row: hoofed side table ($450) via furbish studio, brass ram statuette ($23) via ebay, papier mache rhino ($68) via anthropologie // third row: ceramic stallion ($100) via z gallerie, stone lion-legged table ($975) via ebay // bottom row: ostrich leg side table ($465) via furbish studio, brass koi fish via ebay }

{ personal shopper } trenchery

if you've been with this blog for a bit, you may have noticed that i go from interested to obsessed pretty quickly ~ and right now trench coats are the object of my mania. when we first started discussing them, many of you told me you were still on the hunt for the perfect specimen. the good news is that there's a variation of this vestment for almost everyone out there ~ in every store, color, and at every price point! here are a few of the trenches i'm digging (get it?!):

{ from left to right / top row: kenneth cole: $80, topshop: £195.00, modcloth: $73 // middle row: topshop: £65.00, forever21: $40, theory: $355 // bottom row: calvin klein: $100, boy by band of outsiders: $474, topshop: $160.00 }

what i really really want...

... is to look like i walked off a dries van noten runway, everyday (this fact has been mentioned a time or two ~ or three ~ on this blog!).

elegantly tailored (with a twist) mixed with wildly patterned (with restraint) ~ finished with offbeat sunnies, handmade jewels and classically chic shoes.

luckily, it's a look that's easily attained with a bit of clever shopping! here are a few pieces that i've already ordered or otherwise am seriously stalking this season:

{ clockwise from top left: pringle 1815 blouse: $250, rachel rachel roy clutch: $60, diane von furstenberg dress: $385, giambattista valli tank: $695, carven skirt: $210, max studio pump: $90, anthropologie skirt: $60, tracy feith dress: $250 }

{ freebird }

judging by the response to yesterday's costume post, i'm not the only one batty for birds this spring! for everyone on the same flight, i collected a few feathered favorites from around the web:

{ clockwise from top left: swallow cuff: $212, tibi shift dress: $345, miu miu blouse: $650, ann demeulemeester blouse: $990, modcloth belt: $16, forever21 dress: $23 }

{ because i'm addicted } eBay

{ just a few of my eBay-found friends }

i love love love shopping on eBay! i have used it for years to fuel my obsessions with spider jewelry, designer shoes, and more than anything, vintage sunnies! most recently, i've begun collecting kitschy brooches from designer lea stein via the site, and have been stocking up on thai fisherman pants for the beach. i can't imagine life without eBay, so when i was approached to do a story for their blog, i quite happily obliged. click here to read about what i've found before and what i'm watching right now.

{ simple suiting }

i've never been an itsy-bitsy-bikini kind of gal ~ i find one-piece swimsuits to be much more elegant and comfortable. lately, i find myself most strongly drawn to classic black styles that recall an old-hollywood aura ~ think grace kelly or marilyn monroe on the riviera.
{ above: john rawlings for vogue, c. 1953 }

chic as the look can be, it's still infuriatingly un-fun to shop for (especially when you wait until the last possible second and are in dire need, aka my usual routine) ~ which is why i've done a little pre-summer legwork for us all! here are my picks for the sweetest, simplest suits of the season:

{ top row: vitamin a spotted suit ($238), newport news side-lace suit ($59 ~ i put an order in for this one but have yet to test it out), lisa marie fernandez silver suit via kirna zabete ($385), white house black market ruffled v-neck ($78) // second row: threeasfour mesh-panel maillot via oak nyc ($222 ~ i picked this one up too and LOVE IT), juicy couture side-cinched suit ($164), spiegel corset-style suit ($15), cheap monday simple strapless suit ($52) }

then again, there are also a few totally on-trend, prada-spring 2011-approved, striped varietals currently catching my eye:

{ above: anthropologie bandeau ($144), tommy hilfiger striped maillot ($50), dkny one-shoulder suit ($108) }

finally, as far as coordinating cover-ups and accessories are concerned, i'm really loving:

{ missoni beach towel, classic panama hat (i bought mine last year at brimfield market, from the same guys who supply j.crew with their version), cheap monday dress via modcloth, j.crew leather capri sandals }

what's your poolside strategy this season? or am i the only one shopping like it's already summer?!

{ above: cyd charisse, c. 1954 }

{ westward bound }

you've probably noticed me griping about the weather lately; it's been an especially long winter in new york. luckily, i have a quick trip to california booked for next month, and i'm looking at the planning of it as an opportunity to invest in a few accessory updates, which will help carry my existing wardrobe into the impending spring. usually i (irritatingly) wait till september to find the perfect pair of flat sandals ~ but this year i'm happily embracing a more proactive approach. here are a few things i'm currently stalking online ~ in fact, several of the sandals and sunnies are already on order:

{ above: karen walker 'number one' sunnies ($180), loeffler randall 'ondine' sandal ($325), j.crew 'silvana' sandal ($98) }

{ above: sam edelman 'gigi' sandal ($60), karen walker 'the village' sunnies ($210) }

{ above: house of harlow 'chelsea' sunnies ($138), michael kors 'zen' sandal ($150), cydwoq 'heli' sandal }

{ new pantaloons }

last spring/summer season, a certain pair of khaki-colored harem pants became my wardrobe's surprise MVPs. i never could have predicted they would turn out to be so versatile.

fast forward to last week, when i noticed the exact same silhouette pop up online (above right). you know i had to buy them! seeing that this time they've been done in a fun floral print makes me think they were remade just for moi! of course i picked up the ruffle-cuffed palazzos (above left) as well. never can resist.
