Back in middle school, 'Goth' was something the majority of my peers tended to avoid. While not a Goth myself, I had a simple appreciation for black on black at that age. I liked how it went with everything. I liked how it made me look less "fat" (I was chubbier in middle school!) and most of all, I liked that no one but the Goth and/or Emo kids wore much of it (everyone else preferred god-awful bootcut jeans, cheesy tshirts and those damn
rainbow belts). Today I still love black on black and wouldn't mind being a Goth myself. No, not the middle school Goth that required baggy pants, chains, fishnets and terrible posture with a dash of smugness. I'm talking about
Neo Goth--the updated, less scary version of the classic, dark aesthetic we all know and love.
Neo Goth is all about putting the fun in black by choosing pieces that play with texture and shape. With this kind of Goth, you don't want to disappear into the shadows--you want to stand out and make a statement! It's an aesthetic I've been really into recently. The idea is nothing new, but for a person whose closet is filled with oodles of baggy, shapeless, knits/tees/jeans and other casual boringness, it is a whole new world, I tell you!
The idea of pairing sequins with fur, mesh with leather, laquer with velvet and patent with knit, all in an enticing midnight black and topped with dominatrix belts and just a pop of colour--makes me swoon! In fact the idea of dressing soley to play with texture and emphasizing shape was the whole reason behind my recent closet purging. Why do I insist on hiding under oversized, men's tees and slouchy sweaters--it's time I start wearing tailored clothes and start emphasizing my non-existent figure! *insert battle cry here*
But seriously, even if reinventing my wardrobe right now is an unrealistic idea, it's fun to dream, right?
