{ costume of the day } taffeta & tulle

in 1936, legendary fashion editor diana vreeland began inspiring depression-weary americans with a harper's bazaar column called "why don't you...?" her suggestions were sometimes practical, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, but always stylish, outrageous, and sure to bring a smile. one can't help but love her backing of bubbly, as in: "why don't you...rinse your blond child's hair in dead champagne to keep its gold, as they do in france?" and "why don't you...remember how delicious champagne cocktails are after tennis or golf?"

one of my favorite vreeland maxims, "why don't you...tie black tulle bows on your wrists?" inspired my lust for this blue blouse from the rodarte for target collection. while other lasses longed for their signature leopard lace dress, i knew this bow-tie blouse would add a perfectly prim but flirty flourish to any ensemble.

pairing it with a boy's blazer and an almost awkwardly-long silk taffeta skirt made me feel like a schoolgirl in a sophia coppola film. frothy fabrics have such a wonderful way of transporting us...
